Recent UK Tax and Accountancy News: Search Findings

Regulation

A comprehensive search of recent taxation and accountancy news in the UK from the last two weeks reveals that major developments have already been covered by AOPA.

Search Overview

I conducted a search for recent taxation and accountancy news in the UK from the last two weeks to identify stories not already covered in AOPA's published articles.

Key Findings

Looking at the search results, I can see that most of the recent news are either already covered in the AOPA published articles or are from consultations announced in June 2026 and thus older than the past two weeks. These include:

  • VAT on electricity
  • E-invoicing
  • Timely Payments
  • Shareholders' distributions review
  • Lower-value tax debt recovery
  • HMRC tax receipts

Notable Development Identified

The most recent uncovered development I can identify is:

HMRC collected £938.8 billion in tax and National Insurance receipts during 2025/26, an increase of 9.3% on the previous year.

This came from the Companies House Annual Report published on 14 August 2026. However, this is not taxation or accountancy practice news per se, but rather HMRC's historical performance data.

Already Covered Stories

My searches have not uncovered a genuinely fresh, distinct development in the past two weeks that has not already been covered in the AOPA articles. The major stories identified are:

  • VAT on electricity – already covered in energy focus
  • E-invoicing/Peppol 2029 – article from 5 Aug on Peppol already listed
  • Timely Payments consultation – article from 10 Aug on HMRC's plan already listed
  • CGT holdover relief – article from 14 Aug already covered
  • Companies House ID verification delays – article from 16 Aug already covered
  • Shareholder distributions modernisation – mentioned in consultations but no standalone AOPA article

Uncovered Consultation Angle

The only potentially uncovered angle is:

HMRC's consultation on modernising the rules that determine how some payments from companies to shareholders are taxed, covering areas such as distributions, returns of capital, company reorganisations and interactions with the loans to participators rules.

However, this is a consultation announced in June 2026 and is not recent breaking news.

Recommendation

Based on my two-week search of recent taxation and accountancy news in the UK, all the newsworthy developments identified have already been covered by AOPA in the articles provided (16–22 August 2026). The consultations and policy announcements that remain uncovered were published in June 2026 and are thus outside the "last ~2 weeks" window.

To find a genuinely fresh story, consider:

  • Checking HMRC's official announcements page and recent Tax Update notices
  • Reviewing ICAEW, ACCA and CIOT publications for professional body announcements
  • Monitoring First-tier Tribunal decisions on caselaw.nationalarchives.gov.uk for new case law
  • Watching for Companies House formal statutory notices or urgent updates

This would help identify developments that emerged after 17 August 2026.
