New HMRC Deadline-Tracking Tool Simplifies Filing Calendar for Agents and Taxpayers
HMRC has published an online tool to help taxpayers and agents check filing and payment deadlines and to add them to their calendar. The resource arrived as part of HMRC's broader push to enhance digital self-service and reduce the administrative burden on practitioners managing multiple clients' compliance calendars.
For many practitioners, managing filing deadlines across a portfolio of sole traders, partnerships and companies—each with different accounting reference dates and Self Assessment obligations—remains a manual, error-prone task.
During August, HMRC sent letters to taxpayers to encourage them to disclose any income from let property and reminds them that they may have responsibilities to meet under Making Tax Digital (MTD) for income tax. As MTD deadlines proliferate alongside traditional Self Assessment and corporation tax filing windows, the absence of a central, accessible filing tracker has been a long-standing friction point for agents.
The new tool addresses this gap by providing a searchable, interactive database of key compliance deadlines. Practitioners and their clients can input relevant circumstances—entity type, tax year, or known dates such as an accounting reference date—and retrieve the deadlines applicable to them. The tool's calendar feature allows users to export or subscribe to reminders, integrating HMRC's obligations into existing practice management systems.
HMRC has reminded agents that, since April 2026, the inheritance tax (IHT) and trusts helplines are operating as separate services, with: the new dedicated helpline for trusts to be used for queries about income tax and capital gains tax for trusts, and the trust registration service; and the existing IHT helpline to be used for help with IHT on trusts. The split is intended to reduce call routing delays and improve specialist support, but it requires practitioners to know which service applies to each query. The new deadline tool's availability should help practitioners plan contact with the correct helpline at the right stage in the compliance cycle.
This tool is part of a broader HMRC modernisation agenda. Currently around 76% of customer interactions with HMRC are digital and HMRC aims to increase the percentage of digital customer interactions to at least 90% by 2029 to 2030. The deadline checker represents another incremental step toward the self-service, digital-first environment that HMRC is promoting.
For practices managing complex client portfolios—especially those with mixed cohorts of traders, companies, partnerships and trusts—the tool should reduce the reliance on manual diary systems and spreadsheets. It also removes a common source of client friction: practitioners missing deadlines due to calendar confusion, particularly where clients have multiple tax obligations or where accounting and tax year-ends diverge.
The tool is live and available via HMRC's online channels. Practitioners are advised to familiarise themselves with its functionality and to consider recommending it to clients who file independently or who require a clear visual of their compliance schedule.
